Pneumococcal 10-valent polysaccharide conjugate vaccine (adsorbed)
Indications/Uses
Active immunization against invasive disease, pneumonia & acute otitis media caused by Strep pneumoniae serotypes 1, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 19A, 19F & 23F in infants & toddlers from 6 wk-2 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM 0.5 mL in the anterolateral thigh in infant or the deltoid muscle of the upper arm in young childn. Unvaccinated childn 12-24 mth 2 doses of 0.5 mL w/ at least 2-mth interval between doses, 7-11 mth 2 primary doses of 0.5 mL w/ at least 1-mth interval between doses, followed by booster (3rd) dose in 2nd yr of life w/ at least 2-mth interval after last primary dose. Infant & toddler 3-dose primary series: 1st dose given as early as 6 wk or at 2 mth w/ 4-8 wk interval. 2nd dose given at 10 wk w/ 4-8 wk interval. 3rd dose given at 14 wk w/ 4-8-wk interval. Booster (4th) dose given at least 6 mth after last primary dose & may be given from 9 mth onwards (preferably between 12-15 mth).
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to vaccine including diphtheria toxoid.
Special Precautions
Not to be inj in the gluteal area; intravascularly, intradermally, SC or IV. Anaphylactic reaction. Postpone vaccination in patients w/ acute severe febrile illness. Not to be used for active infection. May not protect all individuals from pneumococcal disease. Consider resp monitoring for 48-72 hr in very premature infants (born ≤28 wk of gestation) & those w/ history of resp immaturity. Pregnancy & lactation. Infants or childn w/ thrombocytopenia, any coagulation disorder or those receiving anticoagulant therapy. Childn w/ congenital or acquired splenic dysfunction, HIV infection, malignancy, nephrotic syndrome; sickle cell disease & born premature. Not to be used in childn <6 wk.
Adverse Reactions
Pain, fever ≥37.5°C (axillary); irritability. Erythema, swelling/induration; decreased appetite; drowsiness; rash.
